The Cursed White Rose Chapter 12 - Leaving Elemental Haven

Chapter 12 is finished. My writing has so many flaws, but I doubt I would ever finish if I tried to completely satisfy myself with what I wrote. Rose is way overpowered, but my habit tends to badly skew making her that way. Next chapter, I plan to answer various aspects of her background that I've purposely left up in the air.

Anyways, hope you enjoy the chapter!

Edit: Updated Character Information with background for Slyph and Erutie. Also Happy Lunar New Year!
Edit 2: I just noticed that the bar for different pages got moved to the bottom when I changed the blog template a while ago. Sorry about that, fixed it now.

Rose taught Sara how to meditate and restore her magical energy. The focus was to borrow energy from her surroundings and convert it into her own energy. This would allow her to quickly recover her magic and be able to use more magic in a shorter amount of time.

After Sara finishes meditating, Yuki returns with Slyph.

Yuki: "I'm back! Slyph has agreed to be my partner!"

Sara: "That's great!" Sara runs to Yuki and hugs her. The two of them jump around laughing. Slyph and Rose watch them from the side.

Slyph: "We haven't made a contract yet. I have never heard of the contract Yuki wishes to form."

Rose: "Ahh. Is that so? The one I wanted Yuki to make is a two way contract. It would allow you to feed her magic to help her grow and when she becomes stronger feed you with magic. It’s mutually beneficial for both of you.”

Slyph: “Why haven’t I heard of two way contracts before? If it’s beneficial to both sides, then wouldn’t it be more widely known?”

Rose: “It’s more dangerous for the familiar since your energy could be exploited by the partner. That’s mostly why. Not that it’s a concern here.”

Slyph: “Ah… That’s true.” Slyph glances at Yuki with a complex expression.

Rose: “What do you want to do?”

Slyph stares at Yuki for some time before respond. “I’ll do it. I promised Yuki already. I’ll trust her.”

Rose: “Understood." Rose proceeds to draw a magic circle on the ground. Yuki and Slyph are directed to stand opposite one another in the circle. A line connects both of their positions together. "Okay. Now each of you pour a drop of blood in the center the contract."

The two follow Rose's directions. As their blood drips onto the circle, it glows a bright gray. Wind begins to encircle them quickly forming a large tornado. Their bodies begin to glow in tune with the wind's movements. As the circle dims, the tornado disappears as quickly as it came. Yuki and Slyph look at one another and find themselves in tune with one another's thoughts and able to perceive the other's emotions.

Rose: "It's done!"

Sara: "Great!!" Sara shows great enthusiasm, but Yuki and Slyph are extremely calm still adjusting to the new sensation of being connected to their partner.

Rose: "Why don't you relax for now and adjust? We can leave introductions for later."

Rose pulls Sara away to train some more leaving Yuki and Slyph alone. The two don't say anything, but simply relax next to a tree enjoying the other's presence. An hour later, Tsubaki and Erutie return and form their contract. Tsubaki and Erutie also adjust to the new sensation, but enjoy small talk about their hometowns.

Rose prepares dinner for everyone before moving onto introductions.

Slyph: "My name is Moonglitter Slyph. I'm from the fairy race and Yuki's new partner."

Erutie: "Steelhammer Erutie. Please call Eru, Eru. I'm from the gnome race and Tsubaki onee-chan's new partner."

The others introduce themselves to Slyph and Erutie. When Rose introduces herself, Erutie stares heavily at Rose.

Rose: "Is something the matter?"

Erutie: "Um... Is Rose Onee-san the legendary Black Whirlwind of Destruction?"

Rose tilts her head in confusion. She shakes her head after thinking about the nickname.

Slyph: "Eru-san, Rose-san isn't wearing any black at all. How does she look like her?"

Erutie: "But Rose Onee-chan looks just like the person in the story my parents always used to tell Eru about that SSS ranked person."

The girls look at Rose in confusion. Rose shakes her head once again.

Rose: "That isn't me. I've never had that nickname. I've had a lot of nicknames, but the Undying Witch is the one that everyone seems to remember me by."

Slyph: "Undying Witch...? Where have I heard that name before?"

Rose quietly signals the two of them to keep quiet even if they remember.

Sara: "Rose, I forgot to ask. Why did they call you that?"

Rose: "Ah... No matter how much you try and kill me, I never seem to die. That's essentially the idea behind it. Imagine if I was blasted to dust, I had a special ability to rebuild my body from even a single speck of dust within a second. Which is why they most feared fighting me if we crossed. I can't do that anymore in my current condition though."

Yuki: "Wah. Sounds scary."

Slyph's eyes widen hearing the description. Rose shoots a quick glare at Slyph to keep quiet.

Rose: "Anyways, we've eaten and I've fed Riri and Rilu. We can practice for the time being since our goal was accomplished so early on."

Slyph raises her hand. "Um, can I make a request?"

Rose: "Sure. Go ahead."

Slyph: "If we're staying here for no reason, can we leave as soon as possible?"

Erutie: "Eru wants to leave too."

Rose: "Hmm...... There's no problem leaving as soon as possible. Girls?"

None of the girls object, so they make preparations to return. Rose cleans up quickly throwing everything into her dimensional space and stops in front of the carriage. She stores it away too and looks at the two Petris.

Rose: "Riri, Rilu, do you want to race?" The two Petris stare at Rose expressing their surprise, but eventually nod. "Then let's race back? Two of the girls will go with Riri and another two with Rilu. I'll carry one and the carriage. Between the three of us, let's see who gets back first?"

The orange Petris look at one another in surprise that a human would challenge them, but Rose wears a confident smile making the Petris give a cry of agreement. Rose whispers something to the two of them, their shock is apparent, but they nod obediently.

Rose: "Good. Yuki and Slyph will get on one of them. Tsubaki and Eru on the other. Master, I'll be carrying you."

The girls look at Rose in confusion.  Why would we race all of a sudden?

Sara: "Rose, why are we racing?"

Rose: "Because it's important obviously." Rose answers with the utmost sternness. The girls follow Rose's direction without any further complaints. "Master, should I carry you in a princess carry or piggyback?"

Sara: "Piggyback." Sara answers immediately. Too embarrassed to think about being carried in a princess carry the entire way.

Rose: "Okay." Rose bends down and Sara climbs onto Rose's back and wraps her hands around Rose's neck. Rose stands up and sees the others ready to go. Slyph and Erutie sit in front of their respective partners because of their smaller size. Rose and the two petris line up. "3...2...1...GO!!!" The three of them dash down the road at top speed.

Rose runs at a fast pace to keep up with the Petris. However, she keeps her upper body steady to reduce the vibrations for Sara. Rose quickly breaks away from the two Petris making them run even harder, but Rose continues to widen the distance. After running for a full minute, Rose immediately frowns.

Rose: "Enemy attack in 5 seconds!!! Turn around!! [Barrier]!!" Rose invokes a spell while braking forming 5 magical barriers in front of her. After forming the spell, she pulls out eight bottles of brown liquid and immediately throws them high into the air.

The petris hear Rose's warning and make an abrupt U turn before circling and stopping behind Rose.

Rose jumps backwards as the barriers are shattered in succession. A tree root shoots appears after breaking Rose's barriers shooting through the air towards Rose. She kicks the root upward with her right leg and simultaneously draws a katana out from her dress. She slashes downwards with her left arm with a perfectly straight movement. The katana cuts deeply, but stops part way through the root. Without hesitating, Rose slams it down with her left leg to finish the cut.

A distorted roar resounds as the dust cloud in front of them settles. A purple colored tree flails its roots and vines angrily around. Most of the leaves on the tree have fallen off the tree's crown. The remaining leaves are all colored purple with many of them curled up fully rotten. Gleaming red eyes are seen on the tree trunk with a large mouth direct beneath it.

Rose: "Tch." Rose clicks her tongue. "Of all the things, it's an undead treant."

Sara: "Rose, what is..."

Rose: "Talk later. If you want to get information, you should scan it first."

Sara: "Ah right. [Scan]"

Sara gulps. "That's an S rank?!" The others and the petris all shiver at Sara's cry. All of them are too weak to stand against the monster. Rose has the highest rank among them, but even she is only an A rank.

Rose picks up several rocks on the road and begins pitching them at the treant.

Rose: "[Flame Pillar]"

A pillar of orange fire forms surrounding the treant before the rocks hit it.

Slyph: "Wah!! Rose, why are you attacking it?!"

Rose: "Obviously to take it out. It's in the way."

Slyph: "But you should use something stronger!! You barely put any magic into that C rank spell!!"

The sound of glass breaking reaches their ears. The liquid from Rose’s thrown bottles ignite from the spell. The orange fire pillar turns a deep blue as it suddenly increases in size and speed. The treant roars in pain from the powerful flames. The rocks shoot through the flame pillar catching on fire as they pass through. The first rock strikes the treant directly between the eyes. It burns through the treant's bark making a small indentation before losing its momentum and falling to the ground. The second rock arrives following the same trajectory hitting the same indentation burning further into the wood. The treant moves its head away feeling the pain, but as if foreseeing the movement. The next rock lands directly in the indentation again. The bark begins to crack as the third rock burns through the trunk and completely shatters with the fourth rock. The last rock passes through the hole and knocks against a large black crystal without damaging it at all.

Sara: "Rose, what do we do?"

Rose: "I'll deal with it. Don't worry."

Sara: "Shouldn't we do something though? There's a rank difference between you and that tree monster."

Rose: "Just be careful. That's enough." Rose maneuvers her hands carefully as she strips the skirt portion of her dress without disturbing Sara on her back. Sara watches Rose's movement, but decides to just watch. Rose balls up her skirt and pitches it high into the air at the treant.

The treant roars in anger and disperses the flame pillar. Small blue embers continue to burn on various parts of its body. Many of its branches and roots are burnt black from the spell. Its red eyes glare at the girls before it roars again. In between the treant’s eyes is the exposed black crystal and shattered bark.

Rose: “That black crystal is the monster’s heart. Break it and it dies.”

Sara: “Ah. Then…”

Sara’s eyes moves to Rose’s thrown skirt. It reaches the peak of its arc and begins to plummet at an incredible speed towards the treant. The treant sees the balled up skirt and uses several roots to attack it, but upon making contact, the weakened and burnt roots shatter to pieces unable to stop the skirt from falling. The girls watch in shock at the development. The treants guards with numerous roots, but the balled up skirt continues to plummet directly at the treant’s crystal core without slowing down in the slightest. The skirt reaches the treant and slams into the crystal core. Cracks spread through the crystal and completely shatter before the skirt completely hits the crystals. It passes through the hole in the treant and bores a hole straight through it passing through the other side. Right before it crashes into the ground. Rose pulls her arm back with all her strength and makes the skirt fly back towards her. Rose replaces the skirt back on her body with a satisfied smile. Everyone watches the exchange completely in shock.

The treant gives a weak dying cry behind falling face first into the ground. Rose walks up to it and gives it a light kick turning it on its back. She nods and yanks out a branch. Rose removes a bottle from her dress and pours it over the dead treant. The liquid shines a bright white as it makes contact with the dead body devouring it like acid. The entire body decays into a small pile of ash within seconds.

Sara: “Rose, what was that?”

Rose: “Holy water. A super potent mixture, excellent for killing undead. Anyways, let’s get moving!”

Rose starts to run down the path again. The petris stop staring in surprise and immediately pursue Rose, refusing to give up the race. As they’re dashing down the road, Slyph looks at Yuki.

Slyph: “Who exactly is Rose?” Yuki recounts some of the background that she knows. “She used to be a much higher rank then? That battle was really abnormal.”

Yuki: “We avoid prying and asking much about Rose. It never seems like she wants to talk about it.”

Slyph: “I don’t think I can hold back my curiosity. She just beat an S rank monster with little effort. You normally need at least 100 A rank individuals to bridge the gap as a bare minimum.”

Yuki: “That much?”

Slyph: “Mmm.”

On Tsubaki and Erutie’s side, Erutie is exclaiming how amazing Rose was with Tsubaki providing supplemental information.

The six of them and the two petris quickly arrive at the main gate. Rose slowed down her pace at the end, but still maintained the lead to the end. She removed the carriage from her dimensional pocket and thanked the petris for the ride. The girls thank them too. The six of them head inside seeing the gatekeeper reading a book to keep from being bored.

Rose: “Hello.”

Gatekeeper: “Oh? Oh!” Upon seeing them, he closes the book and quickly puts it away. “Ojou-sama is back already? I thought you were staying another day?”

Rose: “We accomplished our goal early.” Rose points to Slyph and Erutie.

Gatekeeper: “Excellent. I’m glad your trip was successful. Do you mind filling out this paperwork then?”

Rose: “No problem.” Rose quietly fills out the documents.

Slyph: “Um Rose-san?”

Rose: “I know. Don’t worry.” Rose replies without glancing to the side. "Done." Rose hands him the documents.

Gatekeeper: "Excellent. Is there anything else I can be of service with?"

Rose: "Yes." Rose takes out the branch from the treant. "We were attacked like you mentioned. An undead Treant sage. S rank."

The gatekeeper freezes up hearing Rose's words. He looks at the tree branch and notices the damages. His gaze flickers between Rose and the tree branch.

Gatekeeper: "You beat it?"

Rose: "Yes."

Gatekeeper: "Injuries?"

Rose: "None."

The Gatekeeper breathes a sigh of relief. "That's good. Were you able to obtain any information from it."

Rose: "Not directly since it was too dangerous. But I did acquire the information you're looking for." She unrolls a map of the area and spreads it on the tabletop. "I checked out the area and discovered many more monsters roaming about that would be hazardous."

Around two hundred dots litter the map. The majority of them are blue dots, but twenty of them are red and a single one colored gold. Most of the dots are clumped together in various areas, generally with the blue dots and one red one nearby. However, one group with the red dots moves with the gold dot in the center.

Rose: "The blue dots are B rank, red is A rank, gold is S rank. There is nothing below and above these ranks to be concerned about as far as I can tell."

Gatekeeper: "An S rank. That's a problem. We just sent out best members out this way to investigate a disturbance." The gatekeeper points to the opposite direction of the map. "They won’t be to assist in time. Please, can you assist with these monsters?"

Rose: "That's impossible. There are too many. These girls are inexperienced in battle, so it’s asking too much."

Slyph: "Rose-san! Can you please help in some way? I don't want my home to be destroyed."

Erutie: "Please Rose onee-chan! Eru will help too!"

Slyph and Erutie bow and beg Rose to help. The girls look at Rose with an uneasy expression. Rose glances at Sara, who nods silently. Rose sighs.

Rose: "I can't deal with all of them. That's outside of my abilities. I'll take out the S rank and a couple of the A ranks. After that, you'll have to deal with it."

Gatekeeper: "Thank you!" The gatekeeper's eyes glitter at Rose's proposal. "If it's the A ranks, we can somehow deal with it."

Rose: "Then mind closing the doors? I want to rely on some special magic and want privacy for it."

Gatekeeper: "Yes, of course." The gatekeeper happily closes the entrance and exit to his station enclosing the area.

Rose glances at the map, then at the girls.

Rose: "I'll have you girls help too. Master will be the usual. Yuki and Tsubaki, I know you have little magic, but try and support your partner the best you can. Just don't over do it." Rose motions the girls to stand on the side of the room.

Slyph: "What should we do?"

Rose: "Do you have any equipment that will be helpful in battle?" Slyph shakes her head. Eru takes out the hammer on her back.

Erutie: "Eru just has this hammer that I have from home."

Rose: "Okay." Rose passes a gray jewel to Slyph and a black hammer to Erutie. "A jewel to amplify wind magic and a black steel hammer. Make use of those for this."

Gatekeeper: "I'll help too. I can't let you go alone when I'm requesting so much of you." The gatekeeper puts out a long sword from behind his desk.

Slyph: "Rose-san, I know we promised to help. But with our rank, I don't think even this equipment will bridge the gap to help fight A and S ranked monsters."

Rose: "I wasn't planning to fight them directly. That would be too dangerous. I plan to extract the crystal cores from those high rank monsters and toss them to you to smash them."

Slyph: "Ah..."

Erutie: "That sounds easy."

Gatekeeper: "It's a bit of a waste of a core, but it can't be helped in this situation."

Rose: "If the level was more balanced, we could make better use of the cores by killing the monsters and saving the core. But the situation is too problematic. Anyways, let's get ready."

Rose waves Sara over. She quickly walks over with the book in hand. She stands next to Rose as the book opens and stops at a certain page. Sara glows lightly as she pours magic into the spell, while Rose glows with a black light.

Sara: "Bend and distort the realms of space. [Wormhole]"

A black vortex forms in front of Rose. Rose plunges both hands into the vortex and immediately pulls her arm back out extracting a red crystal. Rose closes the vortex forcefully after extracting the crystal and tosses it in front of Erutie. Rose shakes off the blood running down her arm and glances at the others.

Erutie steps back slightly when the crystal core lands in front of her. She recovers quickly and slams the hammer down onto the crystal creating several cracks. She backs away as Slyph finishes chanting a spell.

Slyph: "Pierce through, [Wind lance]!"

Three lances of wind form and pierce down into the crystal core. They damage the surface of crystal before lodging itself in the crystal. The gatekeeper follows up with a strong stab into the crystal, but does little damage.

Slyph: "This is going to be hard."

Erutie: "Un. Eru barely cracked it."

Gatekeeper: "We have to break it though."

Rose face palms watching their disorganized attacks.

Rose: "Slyph hold the lances a bit longer. Eru, use your hammer to slam the lances deeper into the crystal."

Slyph: "Oh!"

Erutie: "Okay!"

They follow Rose's suggestion and damage a deeper layer of the crystal. Slyph casts the spell again piercing more places on the crystal with Erutie wedging them further inwards. The gatekeeper hacks at the crystal several times in the interval damaging it further. Erutie slams one lance further into the crystal core making it crack in half. The crystal remains immediately disintegrates without a trace.

Rose: "Well that's the hardest one." Sara casts the spell again as Rose pulls out another crystal core tossing it to the others. This time Rose repeats the spell five times tossing three of the five cores to them.

Each of them attacks a crystal damaging it much more easily that the first crystal. Rose holds two cores in her hands as she casually slams them together shattering them to pieces.
Rose: “All done then it seems. Master, you okay?”

Sara: “I’m okay.”

Everyone relaxes from the ordeal. Sara is a bit tired from the magic, but is able to continue without issue. Rose glances at Tsubaki and Sara and see the two of them are considerably pale. She passes a drink to the two of them to split.

Rose: “Then that’s all you should expect from us. We’re all exhausted by this point.”

Gatekeeper: “Yes, that’s fine. Taking out the S rank already helped immensely.” The gatekeeper reopens his station and returns to his desk. He glances at the map again. “What?!”

The girls crowd over the map and notice a sharp decrease in marked dots on the map. Only about 50 dots remain on the map. Five of them being A ranked red dots and the remaining B ranked blue dots. Rose walks over and glances at the map.

Rose: “I was aiming for a bit more, a shame.” Rose sighs with a bit of annoyance in her voice.

Sara: “Rose, we only took out 6 of them I thought.”

Rose: “That’s right. Just a bit of extra service. I placed an explosive in their bodies after taking out the core.” Rose gives a quick smile. “Let’s get going then. Nothing more we can help with here.” Rose passes through the gate with the girls in tow.

Gatekeeper: “Than you very much for the help, Ojou-sama!”

The gatekeeper bows as they leave. The six of them head back on Rose’s flying carpet.
