The Cursed White Rose Chapter 14 – Elements, Contracts, and the E Rank Exam Part One

Hi! Sorry it took so long. I got sick and was unable to write for three days. I was quite out of it most of the week. Thankfully, I had a head start on this chapter so I was able to get it out at a reasonable time.

Anyways, enjoy Chapter 14!

Edit: Made a small addition to describe Sara's clothes for the test. I put an * to quickly find it.

The next day, Rose prepares breakfast for the girls while providing special food infused with magic for Slyph and Erutie. After breakfast, all five of them are subjected to various exercises to increase their arm and leg strength. Slyph and Erutie are both forced to participate despite protests from Slyph. Magic lectures start as they recover from their physical training.

Slyph: “Rose, a question before you start.”

Rose: “Sure. Go ahead.”

Slyph: “What element do you use? I’m a wind type and Eru is an Earth type.”

Rose: “Haha. I was actually going to over that, so just be patient. Today’s lecture is on Elements. I was waiting until everyone had a partner before covering the topic.”

Slyph: “Okay. It was lucky we were elementally compatible then.”

Eru: “Ah! That’s right! We’re lucky!” Rose simply smiles at the comment while Sara and the others look at them with confusion. Rose draws a chart on the board.

The girls learn there are seven elemental categories. Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light, Dark, and No element. The seven categories have various strengths and weaknesses. Fire is weak to water, water is weak to earth, earth is weak to wind, wind is weak to fire creating an intertwined relationship. Light and dark are mutually strong and weak against the opposing element. The no element category encompasses all other spells such as the basic [Magic Shot] spell as well as other categories like Time magic.

Sara: “Rose, how do we know what element we are?”

Rose: “Your ID card. I stopped hiding your elements, so you can see them now. But no need to bring it out. I’ll display everyone’s elemental type here.” Rose brings up multiple screens for each of the girls to see all of them display the same information.

Name
Element
Sara
Light, Wind, Water, Dark (m)
Rose
Light, Dark, Wind, Fire, Water, Earth
Yuki
Water (m), Wind (m)
Slyph

Tsubaki
Fire (m), Earth (m)
Erutie

Rose: “The ‘No element’ category isn’t displayed since it’s the miscellaneous category.”

Yuki: “Wow! Sara has a lot.”

Slyph: “And Rose-san has every element.”

Rose: “H-haha… Normal people only have one. It’s rare for people to have two like you girls. Sara is different because of my influence. As for me, I’m just abnormal in general. The (m) represents minor because it isn't a main element and requires more effort to use."

Tsubaki: "Isn't that bad? We're not that compatible with a partners like this?"

Rose: "It's more that your contract is forming a better connection with your partner. You just need more time. Even Sara only had a Light type affinity, but has gradually developed even more because of me. With enough time, I think she will develop affinity for every element like me. Though, whether that's good or bad is a different issue. Both of you didn’t have a matching element with Slyph and Eru until the contract was formed. Given enough time, your elemental affinity will develop enough to become major affinities.

Sara: "Hmm? Why would it be bad that I can do all of them?"

Rose: "If you try and study everything, you can't become a master at using a certain type of element because of the time it takes. If Master were to study all six elements, while Yuki and Tsubaki study one or two at most. It becomes obvious that Yuki and Tsubaki is stronger since their development is more focused and they have a deeper understanding of their magic."

Slyph: "But it doesn't hurt to dabble in different types."

Rose: "Right. That's also true. Just be careful on how you develop yourself is my point." The girls write down every word of Rose's advice thinking about what they want to do.

Sara: "What about Rose? What did you focus on?"

Rose: "Me? I learned various spells in every element. But my focus is more on unique spells. Specifically, I focus on information tracing type spells and healing magic spells.

Yuki: "Information tracing."

Rose teaches Yuki and Tsubaki the [Scan] skill with Sara explaining some information too. It takes them a few tries, but they successful perform the skill. Neither of them are able to use [Scan] to obtain information on Rose. Tsubaki is also unable to obtain information on Slyph and Yuki has the same issue with Erutie. Rose explains how information can be lacking when there's a difference in one or more rank.

Sara: "How was I able to scan you then?"

Rose: "Your my master, so the information is readily available for you. Plus I make use of our contract so you can easily scan anything up to S rank."

Yuki: "Can Slyph and Eru do that for us too?"

Rose: "Yes. But I'l have to teach them first since the contract is still foreign to them."

Erutie: "Eru will work hard!"

Slyph: "Yes. I'll do my best."

Rose: "Also, Master open your computer." Sara follows her directions obediently. "Repeat after me. 'Share [Scan] information with Yuki and Tsubaki.'"

Sara: "Share [Scan] information with Yuki and Tsubaki."

Yuki and Tsubaki's computers ask to accept information from Sara which they promptly accept. Detailed information appears for Rose as well as their partners. Rose teaches three of them how to permanently share information so that they can benefit from the other's [Scan]ed infromation.

Rose: "There are also other variations of [Scan] such as [Remote Scan] that can tell me exactly what items are found inside your room. It depends on the use, but it has a variety of uses. Anyways, let's start training. We can discuss other things later."

Slyph and Erutie are taught to use their magic to help their partners recover magic at an increased rate to accelerate their training. Sara learns how to transform magical energy into elemental energy to create a basic elemental shot spell. Sara also learns main elemental affinities are much easier to use because of the amount of magical energy required to use a single spell. If Sara uses a light spell and expends 5% of her magic, using the minor dark type would require five times the amount (25%). When using an element she doesn't have affinity with like fire, it would require ten times the amount of energy draining 50% of her magic.

Sara: "But if I develop affinity for the remaining elements?"

Rose: "Then it will change back to normal 5% or one times the amount based on the spell." Sara nods satisfied with the answer.

Sara: "A different question then. Why do you need to create elemental magic yourself? Why not use it from your surroundings?"

Rose looks at her in surprise, but smiles. "Because it's very hard to do it. That's actually a requirement in the S rank exam. Your spell power can be amplified if the area is overflowing with a certain element, but under normal conditions it’s much harder. In addition, it has to be combined with your magic properly to be used to a higher extent." Rose pats Sara on the head. "When your control develops more, we can practice it."

Sara: "Thank you." Sara mutters her response as they resume training. The six of them take a break after training for some time.

Yuki: "Rose. How come Sara is developing so fast compared to us?"

Rose: "Because of our contract. It's naturally different."

Yuki: "But me and Tsubaki both have partners now? Shouldn’t we be growing more quickly too?" Rose starts to explain, but Slyph cuts in.

Slyph: "Rose-san, can I explain?"

Rose: "Sure. Go ahead." Rose steps back letting Slyph take over the explanation.

Slyph: "Yuki, you and I formed the [2 Way Basic contract]. It's a little different from normal, but it's still a first level contract commonly known as the Partner Contract. The higher level contract creates a better connection between partners. This second level is the [Binding Contract] and commonly known as the Marriage Contract. This is the contract that Rose and Sara have. It's one of the highest level contracts around between two partners."

Tsubaki: "Marriage?" Everyone's gaze gathers on Rose.

Slyph: "Right. It's an important contract that is the same as marriage for humans, so it isn't easily given."

Yuki: "I see." Yuki replies with a bitter expression. She wanted to catch up, but it wouldn't be appropriate to take a [Binding Contract] lightly if it was a different form of a marriage ceremony.

Rose: "Okay. Pause there."

Slyph: "Hmm?" Slyph flies back, confused about Rose's interruption.

Rose: "That was an excellent explanation. There was just one mistake. I don't have a [Binding Contract] with Master."

Slyph: "Heh? Then what kind of contract do you have? It doesn't seem like a [Basic Contract]."

Rose: "We have a third level contract. This level is normally called the [Life and Death Contract]. Within this level, when one partner dies, the other also dies through the contract's connection." The girls pale at the grim description.

Sara: "Then...?"

Rose: "We are at that contract level only. Our contract is called the [One Way Soul Contract]. If you were to die, it would damage my soul strongly."

Sara: "And the reverse?"

Rose: "Nothing since they don't believe I can die."

Sara breathes a sigh of relief as they resume training. Rose informs her that Sara already reached the minimum requirement to pass the E rank exam, but encourages her to keep training since her final goal of S rank is still far away. Sara nods and ardently trains. School, homework, physical training, magic lessons, magic training, and sleep completely fills out their schedule working the girls to the bone.

Over the course of the week, Sara learns how to cast the basic shot spell in every element as her affinity quickly develops. In addition, she learns how to create multiple shots for a single spell and how to make a single shot change directions after being cast. Yuki and Tsubaki learn how to cast the basic [Magic Shot] with Slyph and Erutie's help. Rose tries to sign them up for the same E rank exam. However, lack of space forces them to wait until the next exam.

Rose drops an important hint for Sara, "The spells don't always have to be in form of a sphere, you know?" Sara ponders the advice for a bit before attempting to cast a tornado of light mimicking Rose's [Flame Pillar]. Sara immediately passes out from magic fatigue afterwards. Rose heavily scolds her for attempting a higher level Light element spell at her level. Rose reluctantly gives the advice "Make it sharp instead."

The day before the E rank exam, the girls have finished their training early to rest up. All of their stats have increased greatly for such a short amount of time.

Rose: "Okay. Before we break for the day, less talk about the test."

Sara: "Okay."

Rose: "I already reviewed the written exam questions with you so I'm not worried about that. For the practical exam, I want you to only use the [Magic Shot] spell and only form a single shot in an orb shape. Don't show that you can do more that that."

Sara: "Wouldn't it be better to show I can do more than that."

Rose: "I know your development is excellent and you want to do more than that. But you have a lot of unpleasant attention from assassins and greedy people, you don't need more attention. It's better to save the advanced spells as a trump card when your life is in danger. If you were attacked, then feel free to go all out. But take it easy for the test."

Sara: "Okay." Sara assents reluctantly.

Rose: "Everyone passes the E rank exam as long as you can case three spells anyways."

Sara: "Okay." Rose has Sara stand up and grips Sara's shoulders looking her directly in the eye.

Rose: "Remember to be calm and be careful. Most importantly, if anything happens, call me and I'll come help immediately."

Tsubaki: "Isn't the exam really easy? Why would she need help?"

Rose: "Because it would be a problem if an attack happens. Anything can happen after all with how frequent attacks are."

Sara: "...Got it." Sara represses a shiver as she holds herself.

Rose: "Good. Then we'll stop here for today." The girls head up to their rooms. Yuki and Tsubaki already obtained permission to stay from their parents and have already started to feel at home here.

The next day, Rose prepares a filling breakfast, which the girls heartily eat. *Once they finish, Sara gets dressed in a simple pink shirt, thick brown pants and leather boots. Under her shirt is a metal chainmail. She has a leather belt with a short magic staff hanging on the side and the White Rose book on the back of the belt. After Sara is dressed, they pass through the magic world door again. Arriving on field again, Rose transports them north  past the nearby town to a larger city. The girls get off the carpet at the edge of the city and walk to a large building circular in size resembling a coliseum. The gray colored building has numerous people entering on the left and right ends of their current entrance.

The girls are led to a desk where Sara is registered for the exam. Passing through the gate, they see the blonde haired Mary waiting for them with another person in tow. The person next to Mary has brown hair rolled into a bun and wears a dark blue suit resembling an escort guide. She has a short skirt and black stockings on her legs and black high heels. With the high heels, she is just barely shorter than the tall Tsubaki, but still taller than any of the others. She carries a orange pennant flag in her hand completing her guide uniform.

Mary: "Good your here early."

???: "Hello~ My name is Melody. I've been asked to escort you girls around the arena during the duration of the exam."

Girls: "It's nice to meet you." The girls introduce themselves to Melody.

Mary: "Then Melody will take over from here." Mary walks up to Rose with a serious expression. "Are you sure you plan to stay for the test?"

Rose: "Yes. I plan to stay. Go ahead."

Mary sighs. "Understood." Mary puts a silver necklace with a large red jewel around Rose's neck. She pulls both of Rose's arms behind her and and binds them with a pair of large cast iron handcuffs.

Girls: "Wah!!"

Mary: "Sorry. I talked with Rose about it. If she wants to be present during the test. She has to be further sealed so that Sara isn't suspected of cheating."

Sara: "But Rose already is sealed. Why are you sealing her more?"

Rose: "Relax~ It's a precaution. I already discussed it and this was the best option." The girls have an uneasy look as Mary continues to bind Rose. Papers are stuck to each of Rose's arms and legs with a magic circle on the papers. Rose's mouth is gagged with a cloth and then further gagged with a metal ball. Afterwards, Mary blindfolds Rose finishing up the process.

The girls watch the process in horror. Their expressions become increasingly unpleasant.

Melody: "I'm sorry you had to see that. I find it unpleasant too, but Sara-san would have more troubles otherwise. Rose was asked to stay in the Human World to avoid being bound. But she refused and insisted on coming. I suppose Rose isn't Rose unless she makes every safety precaution possible. Sara-san, be careful okay?" Melody looks at Sara seriously.

Sara: "U-un." Sara nods her head.

Melody: "Good. Then I'll take you to take the written exam. What will you girls do? Watch some of the matches while you wait?" Melody address the other girls pointing to the center of the arena.

Yuki: "We're here to support Sara. So we'll just wait patiently for her."

Slyph: "Plus if an attack happens, it's best we stay together."

Erutie: "Aww." Erutie looks yearningly at the arena entrace.

Tsubaki: "Another time Eru."

Melody: "Okay then."

Melody leads the five of them down the hallway. She opens the door for Sara to go inside.

Melody: "The written exam is here. Take your time."

Sara goes into the room and sees a classroom with a large desk in front and rows of tables for the desks. Twenty other people of various races are quietly filling in their test papers. Sara walks up to the large desk and takes her test paper from the large muscular tigerman. She sits down and quietly fills out the test. As Rose precdicted, the question covers the various states of magic overuse, elements in magic, and questions her about personal reasons for learning magic.

After 10 minutes, Sara finishes the exam and stands up. Most of the other people in the room before Sara have already left taking roughly the same amount of time to finish the test. Sara hands the paper to the tigerman who gives her an affirmative grunt. As Sara starts to leave the room, the tigerman glances at Sara's test paper and sees her name.

Tigerman: "Oi Kid." Sara turns around at sudden call. All of the test takers stop their tests and look up.

Sara: "Me?"

Tigerman: "Yeah you. Come here a second." Sara walks back up to the desk uneasily wondering what the problem was. The tigerman waves for her to stnad next to him. Sara does so even more uneasily. The tigerman whispers into your eye. "You're her right? That human girl that became the master of that Undying Witch, Rose."

Sara's eyes widen as she jumps back fearing for an attack. The tigerman looks at her in surprise before laughing.

Tigerman: "Hahaha. Don't be jumpy. I'm not going to attack you. I got a favor to ask. Mind waiting until the all the test takers leave?" Sara hesitates but nods. Sara sits down at an empty chair and waits patiently. Twenty minutes later, all the other test takers have left the room. Sara waits patiently and also nervously wondering if he actually plans on attacking her. The tigerman stands in front of Sara.

Tigerman: "I'll get to the point. I need an engagement present. Can you request that witch of yours to make a present for me so I can propose to my lady?"

Sara: "Heh?" The sudden topic surprises Sara so much her thoughts freeze up.

Tigerman: "Like I said. An engagement present. Can you ask that witch to make a present for me? Of course I'll pay for it."

Sara: "Wouldn't that be something to ask Rose herself?"

Tigerman looks at Sara surprised. "What? You don't know? I thought you were living with her." Sara shakes her head in confusion. "Rumor has it that the first day word got out the Undying Witch was in the human world, people swarmed to ask for favors or fight her. Most of them got rejected and turned away except for some Red Dragon. After that, connection to the human world was strictly regulated to prevent people from continuing to ask for favors."

Sara: "So that's why you're asking me?"

Tigerman: "Right. So can you pull some strings to ask her?"

Sara: "I would have to ask Rose, so I can't say for sure. Wouldn't it be easier to buy something from a store?"

Tigerman: "Come on. Don't be stingy. That witch's materials are extremely high quality. I want to propose with the absolute best."

Sara frowns about the unreasonable request to Rose, but the earnest request makes her waver. "What do you want made anyways? Jewelry?"

Tigerman: "No. That kind of stuff is for the humans. Here's what I want." He places unrolls a piece of paper and places it in front of Sara. Sara looks and sees a blueprint. "A double edged battleaxe with fire crystal embedded as the core. Preferably made from onyx steel."

Sara frowns looking at the drawing. "Would she be happy with something like this?"

Tigerman: "Kah. You don't get it do you? The tiger tribe boasts their strength. Male or female doesn't matter. As long as you're powerful, you’re respected. With a high class weapon like this, any woman would be happy to get it."

Sara: “I guess…” Sara replies vaguely at Tigerman’s passionate talk.

Tigerman: “Then convince that witch to do it!”

Sara: “I have to ask her first. I don’t know a thing about weapon making.”

Tigerman: “Just make her do it!”

Sara: “Don’t say it like it’s that easy!!”

They argue back and forth for several minutes until Sara finally gives a tentative yes. She gives a tired sigh as she leaves the room, but notices the other girls staring at her.

Tsubaki: "What in the world were you doing?"

Yuki: "Sorry, you were yelling a lot, so we were worried."

Slyph: "That was quite the cyclic argument."

Erutie: "Why was Sara onee-chan arguing with that man?"

Sara sighs and explains the reason for the delay.

Melody: "Well that certainly is out of the ordinary. Rose has filled requests like that in the past, so I doubt it is a problem. But it's best to confirm with her first since her situation is abnormal."

Sara: "Right. That's why it was so troublesome since he wouldn't accept waiting until I checked as an answer."

Melody: "For the time being it is best to put that in the back of your mind. You're still taking the E rank exam after all."

Sara: "Yes I know. I'll make a quick note of it." Sara opens her computer and types a quick note to remind her later.

Melody: "There is just the practical left. You were delayed so much that you're probably the only person left to do the practical."

Sara: "Ugh. That's bad. I wasn't supposed to draw attention to myself."

Melody gives a bitter laugh. "It's worse than that. Half of the arena grounds was reserved for the test. After the test, the matches would start up again for that half of the stage. The audience is probably angry at you for making them wait without anything to do."

Sara: "Geh! Show me the way quick!"

The six of them rush to the arena field with Melody leading the way.
